Prelude - Preludio

The preliminary project was drawn in September 2006, but another two years were required for the definitive plan: the date is 16th July 2008. In Italy things go s-l-o-w-l-y no, so it took another year to obtain the official permission to start the work: the date is 5th February 2009.

At last in July 2009 we were ready to begin, but the earthquake in L'Aquila (6th April 2009) blocked everything. Belluno is an

earthquake area, therefore every building project had to be

re-examined by a technical committee! Another year passed by.

Meanwhile I had a lot to do, like emptying the Old House of all the

rubbish accumulated along the years, taking down doors, windows,

bathtub... and carrying everything, separating glass, wood etc., to the municipal dump, !

Il progetto preliminare venne disegnato nel settembre 2006, ma ci vollero altri due anni per arrivare ad un progetto definitivo, il 16 luglio 2008.

In Italia, sia sa, le cose vanno per le lunghe, così ci volle un'altro anno per ottenere il permesso ufficiale di inizio lavori,e si arriva al 5 febbraio 2009.

Finalmente in luglio 2009 eravamo pronti per cominciare, ma il terremoto de L'Aquila (6 aprile 2009) bloccò tutto di nuovo. Belluno è in zona sismica e tutti i progetti vennero riesaminati, così passò un altro anno...

Nel frattempo avevo molto da fare: svuotare la Casa Vecchia di tutta la spazzatura che si era accumulata nel corso degli anni, smontare porte, finestre, vasche da bagno... e portare tutto, rigorosamente differenziato, in discarica comunale!

The basement, heart of the house - Il seminterrato, cuore della casa

The most interesting part of the house is the basement. It is also the warm heart of the house, you will see why. The Hall is a striking architecture, a big arch on the east side (inner courtyard) and a door to the west, that leads to the vegetable garden. Inside a huge stone oven, to bake bread. Originally there was a second oven, already disappeared when we came here 28 years ago.

La parte più interessante della casa è il seminterrato. E' anche il cuore caldo della casa, vedrete perchè tra breve. L'Androne è un'archittetura notevole, con un gran arco sul lato

del cortile interno (lato est), e una porta sul lato ovest, che dà accesso all'orto. All'interno un gran forno da pane. Originariamente c'era un secondo forno, già scomparso quando venimmo ad abitare qui, 28 anni fa.

To the right a red door leads to a room, that was really full of rubbish. It took me two entire days to clean it!

A destra una porta rossa conduce ad una stanza davvero piena di spazzatura. Mi ci sono voluti due interi giorni di lavoro per svuotarla e pulirla!

The warm heart of the house is the ancient kitchen

with the open fire place and the stone sink.

This room offers one of the few remaining examples of a traditional "bellunese" open fire place. The hood is partly collapsed inside, so the hearth stone is full of rubbles and tiles. The sink is made of a red local stone, called "pietra di Castellavazzo", entirely hand made.

Il cuore caldo della casa è l'antica cucina con il focolare, in dialetto chiamato "Larìn" e il lavello in pietra. Questa stanza offre uno dei pochi esempi rimasti di un focolare tradizionale bellunese. La cappa è parzialmente crollata, cosicchè la pietra del focolare è ingombra di calcinacci e di tegole. Il

lavello è fatto con la pietra rossa locale di Castellavazzo, naturalemente è stato fatto a mano.

From the Casetta courtyard you go straight into the kitchen of the first floor flat.

Dal cortile della Casetta si entra direttamente nella cucina dell'appartamento del primo piano.

To the right, a corridor leads to a micro-bathroom and to a small bedroom (room 1).

A destra un corridoio porta ad un micro bagno e ad una cameretta (stanza 1).

The living room is in the middle of the flat, connected to other two small rooms. A wooden staircase leads to the basement. Also this flat, along the years, became a messy storehouse.

Il soggiorno è nel mezzo dell'appartamento, connesso ad altre due piccole stanze. Una scala di legno porta al seminterrato. Anche quest'appartamento, nel corso degli anni, è divenuto un magazzino pieno di robe nella più completa confusione.

Let's start from the second floor: you go upstairs through a steep, narrow, wooden staircase. At the your left hand side there is the kitchen and the kitchenette, at your right hand side, the bathroom and and room 1 (a bedroom).

Cominciamo dal secondo piano: si entra e si sale per una stretta, ripida scala di legno. A sinistra si entra in cucina, con annesso cucinino. A destra c'è il bagno e la stanza 1 (una camera)

In front of you the corridor, with two other rooms. The corridor ends into the living room, with the corner balcony. The house has been empty for at least 20 years and became a sort of storehouse of old stuff.

Di fronte si apre uno stretto corridoio, con due altre stanze, in fondo il soggiorno, con il poggiolo d'angolo. La casa è disabitata da almeno 20 anni ed è divenuta un deposito di robe vecchie.

The Old Houe is built on a slope, therefore floors' arrangement is a bit complicated. The "basement" is the "ground floor"at the level of the inner courtyard, while the "1st floor", is the ground floor at the level of the Casetta courtyard. The 2nd floor" is "second" from the inner courtyard and garden, but "first" from the Casetta courtyard. Very complicated! Pictures and map will help you, hopefully.

Glossary: From now on I will use the terms

"Basement", "1st floor" and "2nd floor". The "inner courtyard" is the courtyard between our house and the Old House; the "Casetta courtyard" is the courtyard between the Casetta (Little House) and the Old House.The "Hall" is quite a big place, that connects the inner courtyard and the (vegetable) garden. Here farmers used to park the cart. Next to it there was a small stable, maybe for a (work) horse or donkey.

La Casa Vecchia è costruita su di un pendio, quindi la disposizione dei piani è un po' complicata. Il seminterrato è il piano terra a livello dell cortile interno, mentre il primo piano è il piano terra dal cortile della casetta. Il secondo piano è "secondo" dal giardino e dal cortile interno, ma "primo" dal cortile della casetta. Che complicazione! Spero che le foto e la mappa rendano la cosa più semplice.


Glossario: da qui in poi userò i termini "Seminterrato", "1° piano" e "2° piano". Il "cortile interno" è situato tra la nostra casa e la Casa Vecchia; il "cortile della Casetta" è tra la Casetta e la Casa Vecchia. L' "Androne" è uno spazio piuttosto grande, che mette in comunicazione il cortile interno e il giardino (orto), che serviva per parcheggiare il carro. Vicino c'era una piccola stalla, forse per un cavallo da tiro o un asino.

Why did we decide to restore the "Old House"? - Perchè abbiamo deciso di restaurare la "Casa Vecchia"?

We do love gardening, but, looking from the balcony, we cannot enjoy the garden, because the "Old House" is just between our house and the garden. Look what we see from the balcony: the roof of the "Baracca" and the "Old House". A rather poor view! Amiamo il giardinaggio, ma da poggiolo non possiamo godere il giardino perchè la "Casa Vecchia" è proprio in mezzo. Dal poggiolo vediamo il tetto della "Baracca" e la "Casa Vecchia". Una vista piuttosto misera!

But looking out of the windows of the "Old House", the view is quite different.
Ma guardando dalle finestre della "Casa Vecchia" la vista è ben diversa.

So the garden is the deep reason that made us take the, rather insane, decision to restore the "Old House".
Quindi il giardino è la ragione profonda che ci fece prendere l'insana decisione di restaurare la "Casa Vecchia".

History: how old is the "Old House"? - Storia: quanto vecchia è la "Casa Vecchia"?

I do not have a precise answer to this question, but I have two dates: 1831 and 1955. On a wooden beam it is carved the date "1831", almost erased by the time and the weather. Furthermore the house was recorded in the Austro-Ungarian land registry at the beginning of 19th century. Probably part of the house is much older.

Non so dare una risposta precisa a questa domanda, ma ho due date sicure: 1831 e 1955. Sull' architrave ligneo di una porta esterna della Baracca è incisa la data, semicancellata dalle intemperie, del 1831. Inoltre l'edificio era presente nel catasto Austro-Ungarico agli inizi dell' 800. Probabilmente parte della casa è molto più antica.

The second historical date is 1955, when my grandfather Apollonio, built, for his daughter Benvenuta (my mother), the house where we live at the moment. He took the opportunity to add also a storey to the "Old House".

La seconda data storica è il 1955, quando mio nonno Apollonio costruì, per sua figlia Benvenuta (mia madre), la casa dove attualmente viviamo. In quell'occasione aggiunse anche un piano alla "Casa Vecchia"

In this old picture of Fol (the only one we have) you clearly see that the house where we live is almost finished, with scaffoldings still there, and that the roof of the "Old House" is lower. The year is 1955.

In questa vecchia foto del Fol (l'unica in nostro possesso) si vede chiaramente che la casa dove viviamo attualmente è quasi finita, ci sono ancora le impalcature, e che il tetto della "Casa Vecchia" è più basso. Correva l'anno 1955.

Look carefully at the "yellow" part, that was added recently (1955), for the new project will give you a shock!

Guardate bene la parte evidenziata in giallo, che fu aggiunta recentemente (superfetazione del 1955), infatti il nuovo progetto vi sorprenderà!

Fol's geography - La geografia del Fol

Country: Italy - Region: Veneto - Town: Belluno. Belluno rises on the banks of two rivers: the Piave river and the Ardo river. Our river is the Ardo, that is crossed by three bridges. The biggest is "Ponte degli Alpini", the medium is "Ponte Nuovo", the smallest is "Ponte della Paglia". Go to the "Ponte Nuovo" and look down the valley, on your left hand side there is the "Fol".

Stato: Italia - Regione: Veneto - Città: Belluno. Belluno sorge sulle rive di due fiumi: il Piave e l'Ardo. Il nostro fiume è l'Ardo, attraversato da tre ponti: il più grande è il ponte degli Alpini, il medio è il Ponte Nuovo, il più piccolo è il Ponte della Paglia. Andate sul Ponte Nuovo e guardate a valle, alla vostra sinistra c'è il Fol.

From the bridge you have a good view of Fol: you can see the "Old House" and the "Baracca" very clearly.

Dal Ponte Nuovo avete un'ottima vista sul Fol: vedrete benissimo la "Casa Vecchia" e la "Baracca".

But if you can't recognize them, the captions in the next picture will make your life easier.

The "Baracca" - La "Baracca"

The ex water-mill is familiarly called "La Baracca". In Italian "baracca" means "a roughly and poorly made shed or hut; a derelict house". In 1982, when Michela and me got married and came to live here, the building was already in a very bad state of repair, so we named it "baracca". Slowly over the years, a wistaria and an ivy covered the roof, an ante-litteram version of "green roof".

Nel gergo famigliare chiamiamo il mulino: "La Baracca". Nel 1982, quando Michela ed io ci siamo sposati e siamo venuti a vivere qui, l'edificio era già in pessime condizioni, per questo è stato naturale chiamarlo "La Baracca". Nel corso degli anni un glicine e un'edera si sono arrampicati fino a coprire completamente il tetto, una versione ante-litteram degli attuali "tetti verdi".

On 27th April 2008, with a terrible rumble, the roof collapsed. Robert, our nephew, .with great satisfaction, helped some dangerous, unsafe wooden beams to fall in.

Il 27 Aprile 2008, con un terribile boato, il tetto crollò rovinosamente. Robert, nostro nipote, con gran soddisfazione, aiutò alcune travi pericolanti a cadere.
